Acetylcarnitine Alpha lipoic acid combination, will it help you live longer?
What is the right dosage? Should you take 100, 250, 500, or 1000 mg a day?
Information on its benefit
for Alzheimer's disease and cognitive enhancement
Acetylcarnitine and carnitine shuttle acetyl
groups and fatty acids into mitochondria for energy production. The acetyl group is used to form
acetyl-CoA, the most important intermediary in the generation of energy from
amino acids, fats, and carbohydrates. Therefore, this nutrient serves as an
energy reservoir of acetyl groups and both help improve energy production.
The acetyl group is also used to make the important brain chemical
acetylcholine.
Those who take carnitine pills notice an
increase in physical energy but not as much mental energy. Acetylcarnitine has a more
immediate and noticeable mental effect than carnitine. The proper dosage of
these nutrients depends on the individual using them and the purpose of their
use. For long term daily intake we suggest using less than 100 mg daily. For
occasional use, a person can take up to 500 mg to 1000 mg of these supplements.

Acetylcarnitine alpha lipoic
acid combination
These two nutrients are often combined
together in a supplement formula mix. There are various products that have this
combination, and these include Juvenon and NSI. There is no human research that
says taking the high dosages of acetylcarnitine 500 mg alpha lipoic acid 200 mg provides health benefits or increases
life span. In our opinion, these dosages are too high and may actually be
counterproductive. If you want to take them for anti
aging benefits, use very low dosages and take days off.
Juvenon has acetylcarnitine 500 mg alpha lipoic acid 200 mg per capsule along
with calcium and biotin.
NSI has ALC 500 mg and ALA 300 mg per capsule. Juvenon is a patented cellular health supplement.
Source Naturals has ALC 500 mg and ALA 150 mg per
capsule
I took a combination of acetylcarnitine 500 mg alpha lipoic acid 200 mg in
a pill form called Juvenon and felt wired all day with insomnia. I'm feeling
tired and have lack of sleep.
High doses of many supplements can make one unhealthy rather
than improve health.
Research indicates the following benefits:
May improve mental fatigue in those who suffer from chronic
fatigue syndrome
Patients with multiple sclerosis are helped by acetylcarnitine, which reduces
their fatigue.
May be helpful in geriatric patients with mild depression.
Improves the function of mitochondria, the organelles within
cells that are involved in energy production.
Acetylcarnitine is suitable for clinical use in the prevention of neuronal death after
peripheral nerve trauma.
A combination of
hoodia, ginger, green tea
extract, spirulina, acetylcarnitine, and several other herbs and nutrients, as
found in Diet Rx, is very effective for
weight loss.
May be helpful in some children with
ADHD, a difficult condition
to treat, but there are some natural therapies worth trying.
Alzheimer's disease
May be helpful in those with
Alzheimer's
disease. Acetylcarnitine protects against amyloid-beta neurotoxicity.
Diabetic
neuropathy
This nutrient is a promising treatment for those with diabetic neuropathy
Erectile function,
impotence treatment
Does acetylcarnitine help with erection? Are
there other herbs that can help?
It may help some, but there are several herbs you can review at this
impotence page that
could help you, some of them, such as
tongkat ali, are quite potent.
MDMA ecstacy
Acetyl-l-carnitine provides effective in vivo neuroprotection over
3,4-methylenedioximethamphetamine-induced mitochondrial neurotoxicity in the
adolescent rat brain.
Neuroscience. 2009, Faculty of Pharmacy, Universidade do Porto, Porto,
Portugal.
3,4-Methylenedioximethamphetamine MDMA, ecstasy is a worldwide abused stimulant
drug, with persistent neurotoxic effects and high prevalence among adolescents.
The massive release of serotonin from pre-synaptic storage vesicles induced by
MDMA followed by monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) metabolism, significantly increases
oxidative stress at the mitochondrial level. l-Carnitine and its ester,
acetyl-l-carnitine (ALC), facilitate the transport of long chain free fatty
acids across the mitochondrial membrane enhancing neuronal anti-oxidative
defense. Here, we show the potential of ALC against the neurotoxic effects of
MDMA exposure. Adolescent male Wistar rats were assigned to four groups: control
saline solution, isovolumetric to the MDMA solution, administered i.p.; MDMA; ALC / MDMA (100 mg/kg 30 min of ALC prior to MDMA, i.p.)
and ALC (100 mg/kg, i.p.). The present work is the first to successfully
demonstrate that pretreatment with acetyl l carnitine exerts effective
neuroprotection against the MDMA-induced neurotoxicity at the mitochondrial
level, reducing carbonyl formation, decreasing mtDNA deletion, improving the
expression of the respiratory chain components and preventing the decrease of
serotonin levels in several regions of the rat brain.
Memory
In aging rats, chronic administration of acetylcarnitine
increases cholinergic synaptic transmission and consequently enhances learning capacity.
The memory of aging rats is rejuvenated by giving them a combination of acetylcarnitine
and lipoic acid.
Acetylcarnitine alpha lipoic
side effects
The mind boosting effect is often noticed within a few
hours. Most people report feeling mentally sharper,
having more focus and being more alert. Some find a mild mood enhancement. The typical dosage is 250
to 500 mg
once a day, preferably in the early part of the day. Side effects of overstimulation may occur at dosages greater
than 300 to 500 mg. Same with alpha lipoic acid, side effects of insomnia can
occur over 50 mg or 100 mg.
