Andrographis
paniculata is an herb commonly used in China, India and other countries in
subtropical and Southeast Asia. Both the fresh and dried leaves, as well as the
fresh juice of the whole plant, have been used in a variety of cultures. In
traditional Chinese herbalism, It is used to support healthy
digestive, cardiovascular and urinary systems. In Sweden, It has been
used for several decades as a primary herb for the winter season for immune
support.

Supplement Facts
Andrographis Standardized 300 mg and herb 100 mg
Extract (10% andrographolides)
What's in the herb?
Some of the compounds in
andrographis are diterpene lactones known as andrographolides. Andrographis
contains andrographolide, deoxyandrographolide and neoandrographolide. This herb
is also known as Kalmegh.
Potential uses and benefits
There has been a great deal of research done with
andrographis. Here's a summary of some of the benefits:
Anti-inflammatory
Andrographis contains many flavonoids, which have
anti-inflammatory properties. Andrographolide, an active component, inhibits inflammatory responses by rat neutrophils.
Anti-tumor
Andrographis paniculata has anti-carcinogenicity properties.
Anti-oxidant and liver protection
Andrographis paniculata treatment
prevents BHC induced increase in the activities of enzymes y-Glutamyl
transpeptidase, glutathione-S-transferase and lipid peroxidation. The activities of
antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase and the
levels of glutathione were decreased following BHC effect. Administration showed
protective effects in the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione
peroxidase, glutathione reductase as well the level of glutathione. The result indicate antioxidant and hepatoprotective
action of this herb.
Autoimmune disorders
I'm writing to ask a few questions about andrographis paniculata that no
supplemental company is willing to answer. I have been researching the possible
effects of this herb and I continue to find research supporting it's immune
system boosting qualities. My questions are: Could this herb ignite an (known or
unknown) autoimmune disorder? Could it temporarily mimic symptoms of an
autoimmune disorder ie, vision loss (MS), arthritis, etc?
A. We have not seen any studies that suggest this herb initiates or
causes worsening of autoimmune disorders.
Andrographolide interferes with T cell activation and reduces experimental
autoimmune encephalomyelitis in the mouse.
J Pharmacol Exp Ther. 2005.
Andrographolide is a bicyclic diterpenoid lactone able
to down-modulate both humoral and cellular adaptive immune responses. In vitro,
this molecule was able to interfere with T cell proliferation and cytokine
release in response to allogenic stimulation. In vivo immune responses such as antibody
response to a thymus-dependent antigen and delayed-type hypersensitivity were
drastically diminished in mice by andrographolide treatment. Finally, the
ability of andrographolide to inhibit T cell activation was applied to interfere
with the onset of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an
inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system that is
primarily mediated by CD4(+) T cells and serves as an animal model for human
multiple sclerosis. Treatment with andrographolide was able to significantly
reduce EAE symptoms in mice by inhibiting T cell and antibody responses directed
to myelin antigens. Our data suggest that it is able to efficiently
block T cell activation in vitro, as well as in vivo, a feature that could be
useful for interfering with detrimental T cell responses.
Chemotherapy
Ameliorating effects of Andrographis paniculata extract against cyclophosphamide-induced
toxicity in mice.
Asian Pac J Cancer Prev. 2006.
Immunological and biochemical studies were here carried
out to investigate protective effects of ethanolic extract of Andrographis
paniculata against cyclophosphamide induced toxicity in vivo. Reduction of GSH in
liver and in intestinal mucosa of cyclophosphamide -treated controls was
significantly reversed by andrographis paniculata administration, with
amelioration of changes in serum and liver ALP, GPT, LPO (lipid peroxidation).
Histopathological analysis of small intestine also suggests that extract could
reduce the CTX induced intestinal damage. The level of proinflammatory cytokine
TNF-alpha, which was elevated during cyclophosphamide administration, was
significantly reduced by the andrographis paniculata extract administration. The
lowered levels of other cytokines like IFN-gamma, IL-2, GM-CSF, after
cyclophosphamide treatment were also found to be increased by extract
administration.
Common cold and flu
Long known in traditional Asian medicine as an immune
system booster, Andrographis has demonstrated significant activity in fighting common
cold, flu, and upper respiratory infections. Two randomized double-blind,
placebo-controlled parallel group clinical trials were performed to investigate the effect
of a standardized extract (SHA-10) of Andrographis paniculata fixed combination (Kan jang)
in the treatment of uncomplicated upper-respiratory tract infections. In both studies
throat symptoms/signs, were found to show the most significant improvement.
Diabetes
Andrographis possesses antidiabetic
property. Its antidiabetic effect may be attributed at least in part to increased glucose
metabolism.
Familial Mediterranean Fever
Androgrphis paniculata, in combination with other herbs,
may be helpful.
HIV
Andrographolide may inhibit HIV-induced cell cycle dysregulation,
leading to a rise in CD4(+) lymphocyte levels in HIV-1 infected individuals.
Immune system
Most flavonoids have anti-microbial activity and have a positive effect
on the immune system.
Astragalus is another immune herb
that has been researched for common cold and other mild infection prevention
treatment.
Does the herb
tongkat ali influence the immune
system and can it be taken along with andrographis herb?
This aphrodisiac herb probably does influence the immune system,
but we don't know how it interacts with it.
Mind effect
Andrographis extract exhibited a significant
alteration in behavior pattern and a reduction in spontaneous motility in animals. The
extract also produced a prolongation of the pentobarbitone-induced sleeping time and
lowered the body temperature in different experimental animal models.
Weight loss
We have not come across any research regarding andrographis to
lose weight. Hoodia and
green tea extract may be helpful.
Combining with prescription
medications
Do you know if andrographis paniculata can be used in conjunction with Cymbalta,
Trazadone, Abilify, and Concerta? Our doctor says my daughter should not use
Sudafed with these drugs because they have too many overlapping compounds, and
might be harmful to her. I'm trying to find out whether this particular herb can
help with uncomplicated respiratory issues safely.
We have not seen any studies with the combination of this herb and
Cymbalta, Trazadone, Abilify, and Concerta. One option, if her doctor approves,
is to use a small amount of the herb for a week before trying higher amounts.
