CMO product benefit and risk, safety and use for arthritic conditions
Cetyl myristoleate pill, research studies as a natural treatment for arthritis symptoms

Cetyl myristoleate is the common name for cis-9-cetyl myristoleate, a compound synthesized from cetyl alcohol and mysristoleic acid. The rational for the use is that it may inhibit the production of inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes.
CMO was discovered in 1972 by Harry W. Diehl, Ph.D., a researcher at the National Institutes of Health. At the time, Dr. Diehl was responsible for testing anti-inflammatory drugs on lab animals. In order for him to test the drugs, he first had to artificially induce arthritis in the animals by injecting a heat-killed bacterium called Freund’s adjuvant. Dr. Diehl discovered that Swiss albino mice did not get arthritis after injection of Freund’s adjuvant. Eventually, he was able to determine that cetyl myristoleate was the factor present naturally in mice that was responsible for this protection. When CMO was injected into various strains of rats, it offered the same protection against arthritis. It has been proposed that it acts as a joint “lubricant” and anti-inflammatory agent.

Has the source of beef tallow been tested free of mad cow disease?
Mad cow disease comes from brain tissue of cows, not from their body fat.

I have purchased 3 containers of 60 CMO tablets from Physician Formulas, reference a book by Dr L Sands (Arthritis beaten today) in the book he states that sea cucumber extract and time release glucosamine sulphate is also required can you help.
There are many herbs or nutrients, besides CMO, that could potentially help someone with arthritis, many of them are found in Joint Power Rx including sea cucumber and glucosamine. We have not seen any studies that compare time release glucosamine sulphate to the regular fortm, and for the time being we think this is a marketing tactic.

What is the amount of CMO in the 400 mg complex capsule? Is it 40% which is 160 mg pure? What is the amount in a Joint Power Rx capsule? Is the 100 mg pure CMO, or is it the complex?
Cetyl Myristoleate complex 400 mg (Fatty acid complex with cetyl myristoleate at 40 percent, along with several other fatty acids including cetyl myristate, cetyl palmitate, cetyl laurate, cetyl palmitoleate, and cetyl oleate). So it is 160 mg CMO per 400 mg of complex. In the Joint Power Rx, it is 100 mg of complex which equals 40 mg.

Osteoarthritis benefit
People with the wear-and-tear kind of arthritis of the knee may benefit from a proprietary cream containing a blend of cetylated fatty acids. Pain relief and improved functional performance may be experienced as early as half an hour after the cream is applied to the affected joint.

Cetylated fatty acids improve knee function in patients with osteoarthritis.
J Rheumatol. 2002.
To determine the benefit of cetylated fatty acids (CFA) on knee range of motion and function in patients with osteoarthritis (OA). Sixty-four patients with chronic knee OA were evaluated at baseline and at 30 and 68 days after consuming either placebo or CFA (Celadrin). Evaluations included physician assessment, knee range of motion with goniometry, and the Lequesne Algofunctional Index. After 68 days, patients treated with CFA exhibited significant  increase in knee flexion (10.1 degrees) compared to patients given placebo (1.1 degrees). Neither group reported improvement in knee extension. Patient responses to the Lequesne Algofunctional Index indicated a significant shift towards functional improvement for the CFA group (-5.4 points) after 68 days compared to a modest improvement in the placebo group (-2.1 points). Compared to placebo, CFA provides an improvement in knee range of motion and overall function in patients with OA of the knee. CFA may be an alternative to the use of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs for the treatment of OA.

Dosage
I am Interested in the CMO pill product by Physician Formulas. It recommends on the label 1 tablet a day. Many of  the other cmo products on the market recommend about 6 tablets a day. I want the product to work. Is more better, or just a waste? recently diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.
Since hardly any human studies have been done with CMO, there is no clear understanding of the dosage required for optimal benefit. Hence, it is a good and safe idea to start with one capsule and gradually increase over days and weeks with medical supervision until an amount is reached that provides a satisfactory response.

Consumer lab tests supplement products to determine their quality control. Are they reliable?
Mostly yes but few organizations are completely accurate in everything they do.

Risks, safety, danger
No major safety issues or adverse effects have been mentioned in medical journals.

Use with other dietary supplements
I’m taking Cetyl-M for joint pain morning and evening, is it alright to take Acetyl-I-Carnitine also. I was diagnosed with Lyme's disease a few months ago it left me with joint pain in my knees and short term memory lose. The Cetyl-M seems to be helping with the joint pain and I’m hoping the Acetyl l-Carnitine would help with the short term memory loss. The only other medication I take is a multivitamin.
Each person is unique in their response so we can't advise what combinations people should take. However, we have not had reports of adverse effects with this combination when used in low amounts.

Interactions with herbal remedies
Any cmo research that reviews the interaction with tongkat ali herbal extract?
We don't know of any such interaction, it is probably safe to combine both if you initially try each one separately. CMO is used for arthritis while the latter is used for sexual stamina.
