Side effects are minimal and the aphrodisiac influence is very mild

Damiana is a small plant with aromatic leaves found on dry, sunny, rocky hillsides in south Texas, Southern California, Mexico, and Central America. Damiana plant leaves have been used as an aphrodisiac and to boost sexual potency by the native peoples of Mexico, including the Mayan Indians. The two species used in herbal healing, both of which are referred to as damiana, are Turnera aphrodisiaca and Turnera diffusa. Historically damiana plant has been used to relieve anxiety, nervousness, and mild depression, especially if these symptoms have a sexual component. The herb is also used as a general tonic to improve wellness. Damiana has also been used traditionally to improve digestion and to treat constipation, as in larger doses it is thought to have a mild laxative effect.

What the research says about Damiana
The libido-boosting power of damiana hasn't been tested in humans, although a liquor made from the leaves has long been used as an aphrodisiac in Mexico. In animal studies, extracts of damiana speeded up the mating behavior of "sexually sluggish" or impotent male rats. It had no effect on sexually potent rats.

Analysis of essential oils from wild and micropropagated plants of damiana (Turnera diffusa).
Fitoterapia. 2004 Dec;75(7-8):696-701. Programa de Agricultura de Zonas Aridas, Centro de Investigaciones Biologicas del Noroeste, P.O. Box 128, La Paz, Baja California Sur 23000, Mexico.
Damiana is a medicinal plant with many traditional uses and a reputation as an aphrodisiac. Essential oils produced by this plant are used in traditional medicine, and for the preparation of liquors and tea. The composition of essential oils from wild damiana, plants grown with micropropagated methods involving cell suspension, and explants in solid medium, is presented. Relevant differences are observed in oils coming from wild and micropropagated plants, where micropropagated plants being more uniform with respect to quality and quantity. The most abundant constituents of the oils were caryophyllene oxide, caryophyllene, delta-cadinene, elemene and 1,8-cineol.

Damiana Plant Research study
Pharmacognostic standardization of Turnera aphrodisiaca Ward.
J Med Food. 2006 Summer;9(2):254-60. Pharmacognosy Division, University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Panjab University, Chandigarh, India.
Despite a long tradition of use in the treatment of various ailments, no systematic phytochemical and pharmacological work has ever been carried out on damiana plant. In the present investigation, various pharmacognostic standards for the damiana plant have been generated so that authentic Turnera. aphrodisiaca could be explored for its traditional claims. Microscopically, Turnera aphrodisiaca leaf showed the presence of abundant unicellular, warty, non-glandular trichomes, anomocytic stomata, and a large number of calcium oxalate crystals along the veins. Powdered stem of the damiana plant showed lignified spiral and pitted tracheidal vessels, and pericyclic fibers were observed in powder microscopy of stem. Total ash of the aerial parts of Turenera aphrodisiaca was approximately eight and four times more than acid-insoluble and water-soluble ash, respectively. The water-soluble extractive value of the damiana plant was slightly higher than its ethanol-soluble extractive value. Volatile oil content of Turnera aphrodisiaca was found to be 0.44% (wt/vol), the thin-layer chromatography of which exhibited seven spots using toluene:ethyl acetate (93:7 vol/vol) as mobile phase. Phytochemically, the damiana plant was found to contain alkaloids, cyanogenic glycosides, steroids, saponins, flavonoids, tannins, carbohydrates, and proteins.

Damiana Extract - preliminary study of its antioxidant activity.
Bioresour Technol. 2006 Aug;97(12):1387-91. Epub 2005 Oct 11. Departamento de Analises Clinicas e Toxicologicas, CCS, UFRN, 59.010-180 Natal, RN, Brazil.
Damiana is used in Brazilian folk medicine as an anti-inflammatory. Since this activity may be correlated with the presence of antioxidant compounds, a damiana leaf extract was evaluated for its radical scavenging capacity (RSC). Results indicate, through peroxidation suppression, that damiana extract exhibited greater antioxidative activity (77%) than alpha-tocopherol (58%). Phenolic compounds may be responsible for this antioxidant capacity.

Anti-anxiety activity studies of various extracts of Turnera aphrodisiaca Ward.
J Herb Pharmacother. 2005;5(4):13-21. University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Panjab University, Chandigarh, 160 014, India.
Damiana has been used traditionally for treatment of anxiety neurosis and as an aphrodisiac. Yet, the plant has never been subjected to systematic biological investigation. In the present investigation, petroleum ether (60-80 degrees C), chloroform, methanol, and water extracts of damiana aerial parts were evaluated for anti-anxiety activity in mice using elevated plus-maze apparatus. Among all the extracts, only methanol exhibited significant anti-anxiety activity at a dose of 25 mg/kg with respect to control as well as standard (diazepam, 2 mg/kg).

Stimulating property of Turnera diffusa (damiana) and Pfaffia paniculata extracts on the sexual-behavior of male rats.

Arletti R.  University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy.
Sexually potent and sexually sluggish/impotent male rats were treated orally with different amounts of damiana and Pfaffia paniculata fluid extracts (0.25, 0.50, 1.0 ml/kg). While having no effect on the copulatory behavior of sexually potent rats, both plant extracts--singly or in combination--improved the copulatory performance of sexually sluggish/impotent rats. The highest dose of either extract (1 ml/kg) (as well as the combination of 0.5 ml/kg of each extract) increased the percentage of rats achieving ejaculation and significantly reduced mount, intromission and ejaculation latencies, post-ejaculatory interval and intercopulatory interval. Neither extract affected locomotor activity. These results seem to support the folk reputation of damiana and Pfaffia paniculata as sexual stimulants.
