Grape seed extracts have compounds called procyanidolic oligomers (PCOs). Other sources of PCOs are berries, green and black teas, and red wine. PCOs are powerful antioxidants, perhaps much greater than vitamins C and E. They also inhibit a number of enzymes that degrade connective tissue such as elastase, collagenase, and hyaluronidase.

Benefits grape seed
extract for medical uses
The primary clinical indications for grape seed extract are the treatment of such vascular
disorders as hypertension, venous insufficiency and capillary fragility and possibly retinal maladies
such as diabetic retinopathy and
macular degeneration. PCOs may improve night
vision.
Grape Seed additional benefits
Moderately high amounts of grape seed extract may blunt salt-sensitive hypertension.
Grape seed extract may be helpful as an antioxidant in smokers. In
lab studies, grape seed extract was beneficial in protecting white blood cell
DNA from damage.
Grape seed extract and allergy
Grape seed extract does not provide relief for allergic symptoms such as stuffy
nose, sneezing and itchy, and watery eyes.
Skin cancer and grape skin
extract
Chemicals found in grape seeds may help ward of skin cancer due to regular
exposure to the sun. Researchers from the University of Alabama, Birmingham
exposed hairless mice to ultraviolet-light. Some of the mice they fed a standard
diet supplemented with grape seed proanthocyanidins, while control mice were fed
a standard diet without this supplement. Dietary supplementation with grape seed
extract inhibited light-induced carcinogenesis, study. Mice supplemented with
grape seed extract had up to 65 fewer skin cancer tumors than control mice did.
Moreover, the tumors seen in grape seed extract -supplemented mice were smaller
than those seen in the control mice. Grape seed extracts appear to inhibit
suppression of the immune system caused by ultraviolet light. Grape seed extract
has antioxidant activity, and UV-induced oxidative stress has been linked to the
induction of skin cancers. Over exposure to sunlight accounts for more than one
million new cases of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers each year in the
United States. Effective preventive agents and strategies that can reduce or
control the risk of UV-induced skin cancer could help the general population.
Grape seed extract not helpful
after breast cancer radiation
Double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomised phase II trial of IH636
grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) in patients with radiation-induced
breast induration.
Radiother Oncol. 2006 April. Department of Radiotherapy, Royal Marsden
Hospital, Sutton, Surrey, UK.
Tissue hardness (induration), pain and tenderness are common late adverse
effects of curative radiotherapy for early breast cancer. The purpose of this
study was to test the efficacy of IH636 grape seed proanthocyanidin extract in
patients with tissue induration after high-dose radiotherapy for early breast
cancer in a double-blind placebo-controlled randomised phase II trial. Sixty-six
eligible research volunteers with moderate or marked breast induration at a mean
10.8 years since radiotherapy for early breast cancer were randomised to grape
seed extract supplement or placebo. All patients were given proanthocyanidin
grape seed extract 100 mg three times a day orally, or corresponding placebo
capsules, for 6 months. The study failed to show efficacy of orally-administered
grape seed extract in patients with breast induration following radiotherapy for
breast cancer.
Grape Seed Research
Effect of a standardized grape seed extract on low-density lipoprotein
susceptibility to oxidation in heavy smokers.
Vigna GB. University of Ferrara, Ferrara, Italy.
Metabolism. 2003 Oct;52(10):1250-7.
The aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of a standardized formulation of
a polyphenolic extract of grapes (Leucoselect-Phytosome) on low-density
lipoprotein (LDL) susceptibility to oxidation in a group of heavy smokers. A
randomized, double-blind, crossover study was undertaken in 24 healthy male
heavy smokers, aged > or = 50 years. Enrolled subjects were given 2 capsules
twice daily for 4 weeks (phase 1). Each capsule contained 75 mg of a grape
procyanidin extracts and soy-phosphatidlcholine or placebo consisiting of 75 mg
lactose and soy-phosphatidlcholine. A wash out period of 3 weeks was then
followed by 4 weeks of the opposite treatment (phase 2). Blood samples were
taken at baseline and at the end of each phase and assayed for plasma lipids and
LDL susceptibility to oxidation. Compliance was good, and no adverse effects
were recorded. Subjects did not show significant modification of total
cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C)
and LDL-C during LP treatment. Among oxidative indices, thiobarbituric acid
reactive substances (TBARS) concentration was significantly reduced in subjects
taking grape seed extract, and the lag phase
prolonged compared with placebo and
basal values. The antioxidant potential of grape seed extract polyphenols may
prove effective in a model of oxidative stress (smoking); however more
investigational data are needed before use in wider clinical settings.
Grape seed extract activates Th1 cells in vitro.
Clin Diagn Lab Immunol 2002 Mar;9(2):470-6
Although flavonoids manifest a diverse range of biological activities, including antitumor
and antiviral effects, the molecular mechanisms underlying these activities await
elucidation. We hypothesize that the flavonoid constituents of a proprietary
grape seed extract that contains procyandins exert significant antiviral and antitumor effects,
by inducing production of the Th1-derived cytokine gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) by
peripheral blood mononuclear cells) from healthy donors. Our results show that
grape seed extract
significantly induced the transcription of IFN-gamma mRNA as demonstrated by reverse
transcription-PCR but had no effect on the Th2-derived cytokine interleukin-6. The
enhancing effect of grape seed extract on IFN-gamma expression was further supported by a concomitant
increase in the number of cells with intracytoplasmic IFN-gamma as well as the synthesis
and secretion of IFN-gamma. Our results demonstrate that the potentially
beneficial immunostimulatory effects of grape seed extract may be mediated through the induction of
IFN-gamma.

Q. Is it safe to take grape seed extract and fish oil capsules at the same time?
I've heard that they both cause blood thinning.
A. There are no clear cut answers. Much depends on the rest of
one's diet, other supplements taken, other medicines taken such as aspirin, a
person's inherent clotting status, age, and most importantly dosage of the
supplements. In most cases there should be no problem with combining grape seed
extract and fish oils, but each case is different and you are your doctor would
need to make the final decision.
Q. I have got a disease called
“Institutional Lungs Disease” and more popularly known as “LUNGS FIBROSIS”.
Currently I am on Prednisolone tablet taking 10 MG every day after breakfast
besides other medicines to decrease the side effects of Steroids. I have been
told that if I start taking nutritional medicine, the disease can be either
cured or the lungs damage which have already happened will not increase further.
Is it correct? Further, I am told that the Grape Seed Extract Capsule will be of
much use. In view of the above, could you please suggest me which product should
I take and of which company so that I improve my health to cure this disease as
well as get rid of steroids.
A. We are not familiar with the nutritional treatment of this lung
disease.
Q. Which grape seed extract is pure? What
should the dose be? any side-effects? are there any interactions with grape seed
extract and medications or supplements? My patient has Parkinson's disease and
is on Sinemet every 1 hr during the day. Any concerns about grape seed extract
in this situation?
A. We are not aware of human studies with grape seed extract that
have evaluated these topics.
Q. I read that if you combine vitamin C
with grapeseed extract it will raise your blood pressure. Is this true to the
best of your knowledge?
A. We have not seen any evidence that combining vitamin C with
grapeseed extract raises blood pressure.
Q. I received a promotional email that
said: "Grape Seed Extract contains Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins, which is a set
of bioflavonoid complexes that perform as free radical scavengers in human body.
Nowadays, grape seed extract is a very popular dietary supplement and a powerful
free radical scavenger better than vitamins C,E and beta-carotene. Main Function
of grape seed extract : Prevents skin aging and inhibits UV radiation, Enhanced
capillary strength and vascular function, Penetrates the blood-brain barrier to
help protection of the brain and nerve tissue from oxidation, Alleviates PMS
problems, bruising, edema from injury or trauma, varicose veins, leg swelling
and retinopathy." Are these grape seed extract claims true?
A. Some of these grape seed extract benefits may be true but there
is not enough human research to claim with certainty that this supplement is
effective for PMS symptoms, bruising, edema, varicose veins, leg swelling and
retinopathy. There is a possibility that further research could prove a grape
seed extract to be of benefit in retinopathy and other medical conditions, but
it is too early to make such claims.
Q. I am in need of liquid grape seed
extract to make a natural fruit and veggie wash. I "Googled" it & am having no
luck.
A. Sorry we are not familiar with a liquid grape seed extract
product.
Besides extract powder (Proanthocyanidins >95%), Herbasin also has 500mg
softgel capsule for your different requirement.
