Rhodiola Rosea
tablets
information
Rhodiola rosea, also known as golden root, grows in the Arctic regions of
eastern Siberia. Siberian rhodiola rosea is a popular plant in traditional medical systems in
Eastern Europe and Asia. Russians have drunk rhodiola tea for centuries as an energy
booster. Russian and Chinese scientists have researched the benefits of Siberian
rhodiola rosea for
several decades. For more
rhodiola information.
Dozens of species of rhodiola grow wild in nature. Siberian
rhodiola rosea has a
reputation for stimulating the nervous system, decreasing depression, enhancing work
performance, eliminating fatigue, and preventing high altitude sickness. Rhodiola rosea
has been categorized as an adaptogen by Russian researchers due to its observed ability to
increase resistance to a variety of chemical, biological, and physical stressors. The
adaptogenic, cardiopulmonary protective, and central nervous system activities of Rhodiola
rosea have been attributed primarily to its ability to influence levels and activity of
monoamines and opioid peptides such as beta-endorphins.
It is not known at this time whether Rhodiola influences sexual activity.

Antioxidant and Organ Protection
Rhodiola
therapy may protect hypoxia-induced pancreatic injury in two ways. It prevents
hypoxia-induced biological changes by increasing intracellular oxygen diffusion and
efficiency of oxygen utilization. Alternatively, it reduces hypoxia-induced oxidative
damage by its antioxidant activities.
Cardiac and cardiovascular effects of rhodiola
Rhodiola Capsules decrease the oxygen consumption of myocardium
and oxygen consumption index in anesthetic dogs, decrease the coronary artery resistance,
but have no marked effect on the coronary artery blood flow. The capsules also have the
function of decreasing blood pressure and slowing heart rate.
Effects of rhodiola on expression of vascular endothelial
cell growth factor and angiogenesis in aortic atherosclerotic plaque of rabbits
Zhongguo Zhong Xi Yi Jie He Za Zhi. 2008 Nov; Department of Cardiology,
Huashan Hospital, Fundan University, Shanghai.
To investigate the effects of rhodiola on expression of vascular endothelial
cell growth factor (VEGF) and angiogenesis in aortic atherosclerotic plaque of
rabbits. Thirty male New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into 3 groups
equally, i. e. the control group (A) fed with common diet and treated with
distilled water, the high fat diet group (B) and the rhodiola group (C) fed with
diet containing 1.5% cholesterol and treated respectively with distilled water
and rhodiola (1 mL/kg per day), all the treatments were administered via
gastrogavage once a day for 9 successive weeks. Rhodiola has the effects of
inhibiting atherosclerosis formation, decreasing the VEGF expression and
suppressing the angiogenesis in the plaque.
Immune system
Production of Th1- and Th2-dependent cytokines induced by the Chinese
medicine herb, Rhodiola algida, on human peripheral blood monocytes.
J Ethnopharmacol. 2009 Jun 22; Li HX, Sze SC, Tong Y, Ng TB. School of
Chinese Medicine, LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong, 10
Sassoon Road, Pokfulam, Hong Kong, China.
Rhodiola algida, an herb ingredient used in Chinese medicine, has been
clinically proven to be effective in enhancing human immune responses. This
study attempted to identify the potential immunomodulatory effect of Rhodiola
algida extract in human immune system in vitro, and to examine its underlying
molecular effects. Firstly, the bioactive marker compound salidroside was used
for standardization of Rhodiola algida extract by reversed-phase HPLC. Secondly,
the regulation of human immune responses was investigated in human peripheral
blood monocytes. A series of cytokines known to play important roles in the
human immune responses were examined. The current study provided quantitative
assay for the marker compound, salidroside, in the Rhodiola algida extract for
ensuring the quality consistency of Rhodiola algida used in the following
experiments. Biological assay indicated that Rhodiola algida stimulates human
peripheral blood lymphocytes and its underlying immunomodulatory effects
probably through its regulation of IL-2 in Th1 cells and IL-4, IL-6, IL-10 in
Th2 cells. The findings may enable us to further explain the pharmacological
properties in Chinese medicine and make Rhodiola algida a very promising
immunomodulating agent.
Longevity
A 2007 study published in Rejuvenation Research found rhodiola rosea increased
the lifespan of fruit fly populations. Flies that ate a diet rich in rhodiola
rosea lived an average of 10 percent longer than those not eating the herb.
Three other herbs that were also tested -- Lu Duo Wei, Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang and
San Zhi Pian -- had no effect on fruit fly longevity.
Memory and Learning
Studies with mice did not show
rhodiola to have much
of an effect on memory.
Stress and anxiety management
Adaptogenic and central nervous system effects of single doses of 3% rosavin and
1% salidroside Rhodiola rosea L. extract in mice.
Phytother Res. 2007 Jan;21(1):37-43. Perfumi M, Mattioli L. Department of
Experimental Medicine and Public Health, University of Camerino, Via Scalzino 3,
62032 Camerino (MC), Italy.
Due to these therapeutic properties, R. rosea is considered to be one of the
most active adaptogenic drugs. The purpose of the present study was to
re-investigate the effects produced by a single oral administration of an
Rhodiola rosea hydroalcohol extract (containing 3% rosavin and 1% salidroside)
on the central nervous system in mice. Rhodiola rosea extract significantly, but
not dose-dependently, induced antidepressant-like, adaptogenic, anxiolytic-like
and stimulating effects in mice. This study thus provides evidence of the
efficacy of Rhodiola rosea extracts after a single administration, and confirms
many preclinical and clinical studies indicating the adaptogenic and stimulating
effects of such R. rosea extracts. Moreover, antidepressant-like and anxiety
reducing activities of Rhodiola rosea were shown in mice for the first time.
Rhodiola and bipolar disorder
Q. I have seen a few warnings against using rhodiola rosea herb if you are
diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I’ve seen the warning on some labels and
online.
A. There are many herbs, when used in high concentrations, that can
cause overstimulation, restlessness, and perhaps induce mania. Rhodiola rosea
herb may theoretically fall in this category, along with ginseng and others, but
we have not seen, as of August 2008, any specific human research that has
evaluated the role of rhodiola herb in inducing mania. As with many herbs that
increase energy levels, it is best to use lower dosages to avoid side effects of
restlessness and insomnia.
Rhodiola Revolution
book
Rhodiola Revolution is a book written by Richard P. Brown, M.D., and Patricia L.
Gerbarg, M.D. with Barbara Graham.
One of the co-authors has previously written Stop Depression Now. The Rhodiola
Revolution book claims Rhodiola rosea has amazing healing powers. They say,
"With unprecedented access to more than 30 years of compelling scientific
research, including top-secret studies from the former Soviet Union, Dr. Richard
Brown and Dr. Patricia Gerbarg offer exclusive proof of rhodiola’s remarkable
ability to: Maximize energy, Fight stress and aging, Sharpen memory and
concentration, Enhance sexual function and physical performance, Protect against
heart disease and cancer, Help melt away extra pounds."
Comments: It appears rhodiola rosea is a helpful herb in terms of
energy enhancement, but it is premature to say that it can protect against heart
disease or cancer.
Rhodiola plant
The Rhodiola plant has adapted to extremely harsh conditions and grows
primarily in sandy ground at extremely cold, high altitudes with little rainfall
and low oxygen. Rhodiola plant is a perennial that reaches a height of 10 to 30
inches and produces yellow, orange or red blossoms. The rhodiola plant and root
grow slowly and harvesting occurs after at least 3 years of growth.

Q. According to a website, it states that
Rhodiola Rosea can cause side effects such as irritability, restlessness and
insomnia. What is the maximum amount per day and how frequently, maximum days
per week, every day, can rhodiola rosea be taken so that a person does not
experience any side effects (such as irritability, restlessness and insomnia)
from rhodiola rosea intake?
A. Each person is different in their response. It is best to at
first start with half a rhodiola rosea capsule or tablet in the morning for 2
days and then take more or less or take a day off depending on initial response.
Q. How is Siberian rhodiola rosea
different than Tibetan rhodiola rosea?
A. We have not seen research comparing Tibetan rhodiola rosea to
Siberian rosea.
Q. I recently started taking three new
suppliments: Alpha Lipoic acid,
astaxanthin, and rhodiola rosea. I've also
noticed an increase in energy, had a sustained pleasant mood and a loss of
appetite from the first day I took them (I haven't been using cocaine, honest!).
Could any of these suppliments be the cause of this?
A. We are not sure about astaxanthin but alpha lipoic acid and
rhodiola can certainly have this effect. See
weight loss pill information.
Q. Could you tell me why rhodiola rosea
Extract is not recommended during pregnancy. I can see no rhodiola side effects
associated with a low dose of 250 mg of standardized extract per day. Any
information would be most appreciated.
A. We have not seen any studies with rhodiola rosea extract and
pregnancy, therefore it is not clear if this herb is safe to use during
pregnancy. It may be, we just don't know.
Q. The Rhodiola product is 327 mg. My
understanding is that you should start off at 100 mg and work up to see how much
you might need. I am using it for depression and energy. Do you have any that is
100 mg. and is this information valid.
A. There is no " accepted " starting dose of rhodiola. We often
suggest taking a portion or a tablet or capsule when taking a new herb since it
is impossible to predict how a person will react. Some people may find 100 mg of
rhodiola to be effective while others may need 2 or 3 pills or more.
Q. I am 80 years old and am taking
rhodiola rosea 100 mgs strength twice a day. This has helped me a lot in many
ways - now taking this for about 3 years. I have noticed that I bruise very
easily and get large bruises. Can this be a side-effect of this rhodiola herb?
The rhodiola rosea 100 mgs 2/day is made by Medicine Plants. Rhodiola rosea
makes me more active, alert, have noticed better mood and overall feel much
better.
A. We're not aware of any long term human studies that have looked
into the effect of rhodiola herb on blood thinning or anti platelet activity. It
is often a good idea to take occasional breaks from the use of herbs. As we age,
there is a tendency to bruise easier, so this may also be a factor. Dietary
changes can also influence bruising.
Q. I read in an article on rhodiola
extract in Science News which states that in 1989 the then Soviet
government standardized the supplement to contain 3% rosavins. I then
looked at a couple of rhodiola extract supplements on-line and found that
many of them claim to contain 4% rosavins (and something called salidroside,
usually at 1%). The rhodiola product available at Physician Formulas contains only 0.8% rosavins as well as 0.8%
salidrosides. The recommended dosages on the PF site also differs, although they sound
more conservative, they may be a more informed and cautious approach.
Could you please explain the discrepancies I have found between this
rhodiola
product and others.
A. A long time ago herbs used to be available only as regular
powder or leaf form, or as tinctures. Now, many herbs are available in
different extract concentrations. Since human
research with these various extract potencies is limited, it is difficult
to claim that one extract percentage or potency is better than another.
Sometimes if an herbal extract is too concentrated and of too high potency, it
can cause more side effects. Just because one organization or one country
has chosen a particular extract percentage as a standard does not mean
that particular extract is the best option for you. Different scientists,
organizations, and medical doctors can have different viewpoints on this
topic. The bottom line is that the ideal extract potency is what works for
any particular person rather than what is recommended or chosen by an
organization. And the only way for a consumer to tell is to try the
product in various dosages to see which amount works best for their unique
condition.
